About

What is Color

Guard?

Winter guard is an indoor color guard sport derived from military ceremonies or veterans organizations ceremonies. Unlike traditional color guard, Winter Guard is performed indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band or orchestra. Winter guard was invented in the United States, which remains the predominant scene for the art.  For more information, follow this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_guard

SHS Starlites

The Starlites season starts with a clinic in late April and stretches all the way through Championship Weekend (Late March or Early April).  The spring clinic and mandatory summer camp are held at SHS and focus on developing fundamental skills in both dance and equipment (flags, rifles, sabres).  This is also when the choreography for the halftime show and parades is learned.  This is an important time for both new and returning members to develop their skills as well as build relationships with their teammates.

The Starlites participate in a week-long marching band camp at SHS the week before school starts.  At this time, members will learn marching fundamentals (which will carry through winter season and future years) and their drill for football game performances.  Throughout the fall, the Starlites perform at all home football games, local parades and even a college football halftime show.

As football season wraps up, we begin preparing for our competitive winter guard season.  The Starlites compete in the Midwest Color Guard Circuit (MWCGC).  A choreographer works with the team to develop an indoor show utilizing the dace and equipment technique that members have been working on all year.  The Starlites typically perform at 4-5 Regional Contests (including a home show at SHS) and travel to Championship in La Porte, IN (typically in early April).  The Starlites may also perform at SHS basketball game half time shows during this time.

This competitive activity requires dedication and commitment, but the hard work truly pays off.  The coaching staff can teach you everything you need to know to be successful in this activity- NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE necessary.
